đŸ’” Before You Pay for That AI Tool... Read This

Most “AI apps” just repackage free tools. Learn what’s worth paying for — and what isn’t.

The Truth About Most "AI Apps"

That $59/month AI writing assistant promising to “revolutionise your workflow”? It’s probably just ChatGPT in a fancy outfit.

Welcome to the world of AI wrappers — apps that slap a slick interface over an existing AI model and charge you for what’s freely available elsewhere.

How to Spot an AI Wrapper

Watch for these red flags:

  • Vague claims about “proprietary AI” with no technical details

  • There is no mention of which model powers the tool (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.)

  • Pricing that exceeds ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) without clear added value

  • Features that look identical to what free tools already do

  • Launch dates post-ChatGPT boom (late 2022 onward)

A Common Offender: Logo Generators

You've seen them — “Professional logos in seconds” for $49–99.
Most just send your prompt to Stable Diffusion or DALL·E and charge you for the privilege. You can do the same (or better) for free.

Not all wrappers are bad. Some add real value with custom workflows or better UX. But many are just expensive middlemen.

The Better Alternatives: Go Direct to the Source

🧠 Language Models

ChatGPT Plus ($20/month)

  • Access GPT-4o with browsing, vision, and audio input

  • Image and video generation are now included

  • More powerful than most wrappers using GPT under the hood

Claude Pro ($20/month)

  • Ideal for reasoning, structured writing, and large file inputs

  • Great for business analysis and creative work

Gemini Advanced ($20/month)

  • Google’s AI, deeply integrated with Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Gmail)

  • Solid for research and automation

Microsoft Copilot Pro ($20/month)

  • Built into Word, Excel, Outlook

  • Powerful for productivity and reporting workflows

The Image Generation Alternative

Instead of paying $49 for a logo, you’re better going to the source:

  • Stable Diffusion – The open-source model behind most AI art

  • FLUX â€“ High-quality image generation with text clarity

  • ControlNet – Guide outputs with sketches or reference poses

  • Style-specific models – Anime, photorealism, abstract, branding

And MidJourney?

MidJourney’s output is excellent, and its community adds real value.
However, for tasks like logos, social graphics, or mockups, free tools on HuggingFace often match its quality.

The Specialized Route: HuggingFace

HuggingFace is an open-source AI playground — think of it as a marketplace for cutting-edge models from researchers and developers worldwide. Most tools are free, browser-based, and don’t require sign-ups or downloads.

It’s where AI happens.

How to Use It:

  1. Visit huggingface.co/spaces

  2. Search for tools like “logo generator”, “pose tracking”, or “document summarizer”

  3. Run them directly in your browser

  4. Bookmark the ones that deliver

The Smart Approach: Mix and Match

Instead of paying $99/month for a single tool that does one thing, build a flexible toolkit:

  • Use ChatGPT Plus or Claude as your foundation

  • Pull in HuggingFace tools for specialised jobs

  • Leverage native AI in Google Docs or Excel when needed

Total monthly cost: often under $30 — with more capability than a $99 wrapper.

Final Check: Red Flags to Avoid

  • Tools charging more than $30/month for basic chat

  • No mention of the AI model powering it

  • “Revolutionary AI” claims from companies with no AI history

  • Gating core features behind premium plans

This Week’s Action Step

Audit your AI stack. Are you paying for wrappers you don’t need?

  • ✅ Try a HuggingFace tool that matches something you already pay for

  • ✅ Compare ChatGPT or Claude with your current app

  • ✅ Keep what works — ditch what doesn’t

Until next week,

Adam
